Buddhism or Christianity

Equip the knowledge and theology of Buddhism and Christianity, for one to make an informed choice on salvation between the two.

Introduction

This blog aims to provide information on the theology and doctrine of Buddhism and Christianity, especially on salvation, so anyone interested in these two religions can make an informed choice on salvation between the two.

I was Buddhist for over 40 years and have been a Christian now for over 20 years. I became a Buddhist at a young age when I was in Hong Kong. My mother was a Buddhist preacher who insisted that everyone in her family be Buddhist. We moved to the United States when I was 19, and I stayed on as a Buddhist until I was 50, when my mother passed away. Even though my mother was a Buddhist preacher, she did not teach me much about Buddhist theology. She mainly taught me to live as a good person, do good things and not bad things, and believe in the Buddhist god. When I die, I will go to the Buddhist heaven. In all my life as a Buddhist, I have never known Buddhist theology. I later discovered that most Buddhist friends I met also did not know Buddhist theology.

I graduated from a Catholic high school in Hong Kong and was required to study the Bible. The Bible was one of the classes I needed to pass to graduate high school. For all the years I studied the Bible in high school, I never understood salvation and how to help people get saved. I felt that I understood the Bible academically but not spiritually. When I became a Christian, around 50 years old, I attended Christian churches. There was not a lot of emphasis on evangelism or soul-winning, bringing people to Christ. The church congregation did not take the last commandment of Jesus Christ, the Great Commission, seriously. They are happy with the current congregation’s size and spiritual state and are not bothered by not bringing more people to Christ. Some of them talk about the need to help people get saved and be obedient to the teachings of Christ. However, their way of life tells otherwise. Some are unsure of their salvation. I know Catholics who are not sure whether they are saved despite a lifetime of being a Catholic. Many Christians need help understanding the key Christian doctrines.

This blog does not advocate either Buddhism or Christianity. Even though I was a Buddhist for over 40 years, I was converted to Christianity over 20 years ago. I respect both Buddhism and Christianity and their followers. I notice many Buddhists and Christians and people interested in Buddhism or Christianity need help understanding their theology and doctrine. Before committing to a religion, one must understand what he or she is getting into. The decision should be informed, not based on ignorance or misunderstanding. This blog hopes to address this issue by providing the knowledge one needs to make such a decision.
